Personally, I've been using this control since 1990, and it's still working. It's a solid, durable product. I use it with the Zevatron pickaxe soldering iron, but it can be used with almost any soldering iron.

Why regulation?

The temperature control will enable you to obtain the ideal temperature depending on what you want to solder. Well-curved solder joints for strong, solid Tiffany, and beautiful solder joints without melting the lead in the stained glass.

If the seams are large and I'm soldering quickly, I need more heat, so I increase the temperature on the regulator. If my solder joints are small and I'm soldering slowly, I need less heat, so I lower the temperature on the regulator.

I always test first on a piece of lead outside my stained glass. I don't leave the equipment on if I'm not using it.

For the Zevatron 140 W pickax iron, I set the temperature between 5 and 7 depending on my work.

To cool my iron quickly if it gets too hot, giving flat, dull solder joints or melting the lead, I turn it off and heat some tin on a metal can (like a tin can). Then I start it up again by lowering the temperature a little on the regulator.

If the tin doesn't melt or remains pasty, I increase the temperature slightly on the regulator.

If the tin doesn't adhere, I check that I've cleaned my lead or copper with steel wool or steel wool before soldering (then vacuum) and that I've applied the right stripper. Preparing the surfaces well beforehand ensures good solder joints.

If the tin doesn't stick, I check that I've cleaned my lead or copper with steel wool or steel wool before soldering (then vacuum) and that I've applied the right stripper. Preparing the surfaces well beforehand ensures good solder joints.

(The tip of the 140 W pick-axe can be filed flat when it becomes worn and hollow. The tips of Weller irons, on the other hand, do not file, but can be gently cleaned with a damp sponge).
